The pirates were all in a mad rush as they boarded the landing boats to go ashore. Laramie and Godfrey had found a diamond on the island, and everyone was pushing to get out and find some treasure for themselves. In the excitement, however, nobody noticed another ship pulling up close behind the Lady Jane. The men piled into little rowboats until they were so full one would think they were going to sink. Some sailors jumped over the side and began to swim to the beach. All of them had an excited, greedy glint in their eyes as they thought of the treasure that lay ahead.
Captain Jim left two men aboard the Lady Jane in order to guard the ship, but these men were not looking around observantly as they should have been. They were hanging on the edge of the ship and staring at the other pirates going ashore. I'm sure they were wishing they could join in the search and find a wealth in gold and jewels. This lack of vigilant watch gave the other ship the opportunity they needed, the ship slid quietly into the shallow waters.
A tall, sun browned man in a fancy blue coat stood in the quarterdeck of the other ship. He brushed his long thin hands through his wavy hair and smiled.
"Just think, all this time its been right within our reach, and we never knew it!" he said to the fellow beside him. The fellow grinned.
"Thank you, Captain Jim!" he replied. "Will we go ashore tonight, sir?"
"No, we'll wait until morning." the tall man said. "By then Jim will have found all the treasure, and all we will have to do is take it from him."
"Brilliant!" said the fellow beside him, "They do the work, and we get the pay!"
